What are Ovarian cysts and How are they Treated?

Female reproductive system consists of a uterus and two ovaries, one on each side of the body. While the uterus functions as a place where a baby grows, the ovaries are the most important part of the reproductive system. The ovaries release hormones throughout the woman's life due to which the various organs of body function.

Ovarian cysts are common and many women may experience cysts at least once in their lifetime.

A cyst in the ovary is a fluid-filled sac which can be developed in or around the ovary, sometimes engulfing the whole ovary. It can vary in size from 3cm too largely sized cysts as big as a baby’s head or a melon. The consistency and fluid in the cyst can vary from thin fluids to thicker liquids, even few cysts may contain material such as fat, hair, and teeth.

Ovarian cysts can cause multiple symptoms:-
         1.     Pain abdomen
         2.     Dull aching heaviness in lower abdomen
         3.     Bleeding problems either excessive bleeding
         4.     Irregular menses
         5.     In-between the cycle bleeding
         6.     Frequent urination
         7.     Severe pain in the abdomen due to twisting or rupture of the cyst
         8.     Problems in conceiving
         9.     Painful periods
        10.     Pain during sex

There are different kinds of cyst such as:-
1.     Simple cysts
2.     Hemorrhagic Cysts
3.     Endometriomas
4.     Dermoid cysts

Treatment of Ovarian cysts depends on their type, size and the problems they are causing. Most of the cysts are responsive to medical treatment and resolve with treatment. Only very few (about 1 in 10) cysts require surgery for removal.

Cysts especially less than 5cm in size are more amenable to medical treatment and kept on a “ wait and watch policy”. The ovarian cysts requiring surgery are easily managed via laparoscopic (keyhole) approach, in which the patient is very comfortable with less pain and less bleeding. Ovarian cyst surgery usually requires only 24 hours admission in hospital.  In the laparoscopic surgery, the cyst is only removed, leaving the ovaries intact by the best laparoscopic surgeon in Rohini or Best Gynaecology surgeon in Rohini at Synergy Clinic.
